Hanuman Chalisa — English Meaning

दोहा १

श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि। बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥

With the Guru’s grace, I cleanse my mind and praise the pure glory of Rama.

दोहा २

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार। बल बुधि विद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥

I remember Hanuman and ask for strength, wisdom and knowledge, and freedom from inner troubles.

चौपाई 1

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥

Victory to Hanuman, ocean of knowledge and virtue, whose glory shines through the three worlds.

चौपाई 2

राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा। अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥

You are Rama’s messenger, abode of incomparable strength, son of Anjana and the Wind.

चौपाई 3

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥

Great hero of immense valor; remover of harmful thoughts and companion of good understanding.

चौपाई 4

कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा। कानन कुण्डल कुंचित केसा॥

Your radiant golden form is beautifully adorned with earrings and curly hair.

चौपाई 5

हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै। काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥

You hold the thunderbolt and banner and wear the sacred thread.

चौपाई 6

शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन। तेज प्रताप महा जग वंदन॥

You are revered as Shankara’s son and Kesari’s son; your glory is honored by the world.

चौपाई 7

विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर। राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥

Learned, virtuous and intelligent, you are ever eager to carry out Rama’s work.

चौपाई 8

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया। राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥

You delight in hearing the Lord’s deeds; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita dwell in your heart.

चौपाई 9

सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा। बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥

You took a tiny form before Sita and a formidable form to burn Lanka.

चौपाई 10

भीम रूप धरि असुर संहारे। रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥

You took a mighty form, destroyed demons and completed Rama’s work.

चौपाई 11

लाय सजीवन लखन जियाए। श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाए॥

You brought the life-restoring herb and Rama joyfully embraced you.

चौपाई 12

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई। तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥

Rama praised you greatly and said you were as dear as Bharata.

चौपाई 13

सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं। अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥

Rama said countless mouths could not fully sing your glory and embraced you.

चौपाई 14

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा। नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥

Sages, Brahma, Narada, Saraswati and Shesha praise your glory.

चौपाई 15

जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते। कवि कोविद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥

Yama, Kubera, guardians of the directions, poets and scholars cannot fully describe you.

चौपाई 16

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा। राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥

You helped Sugriva, brought him to Rama and helped him regain his kingdom.

चौपाई 17

तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषण माना। लंकेश्वर भए सब जग जाना॥

Vibhishana followed your counsel and became king of Lanka.

चौपाई 18

जुग सहस्र योजन पर भानू। लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥

As a child you leapt toward the sun, taking it for a sweet fruit.

चौपाई 19

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं। जलधि लाँघि गए अचरज नाहीं॥

Carrying Rama’s ring, you crossed the ocean; for you it was no wonder.

चौपाई 20

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते। सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥

Difficult tasks in the world become easier through your grace.

चौपाई 21

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे। होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥

You guard Rama’s door; none enters without your permission.

चौपाई 22

सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना। तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना॥

Those who take refuge in you find peace and freedom from fear.

चौपाई 23

आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै। तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै॥

You alone contain your immense power; your mighty call shakes the three worlds.

चौपाई 24

भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै। महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥

Remembering the great hero is traditionally associated with protection from fearsome forces.

चौपाई 25

नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा। जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥

Constant remembrance of Hanuman is praised as a source of courage and relief from suffering.

चौपाई 26

संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै। मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥

Hanuman is praised as the one who helps devotees through difficulties when remembered in thought, word and deed.

चौपाई 27

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा। तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥

You completed all the tasks entrusted to you by Rama, the ascetic king.

चौपाई 28

और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै। सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै॥

Heartfelt wishes are described as receiving abundant fruits through devotion.

चौपाई 29

चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा। है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥

Your glory is celebrated through all four ages and illuminates the world.

चौपाई 30

साधु संत के तुम रखवारे। असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥

You protect sages and good people, destroy harmful forces and are beloved of Rama.

चौपाई 31

अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता। अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥

Sita is traditionally said to have granted you the boon of bestowing eight siddhis and nine treasures.

चौपाई 32

राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा। सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥

You hold the nectar of devotion to Rama and remain forever his servant.

चौपाई 33

तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै। जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥

Through devotion to you, one approaches Rama and remembers freedom from the sorrows of life.

चौपाई 34

अंतकाल रघुवर पुर जाई। जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई॥

The verse expresses the devotional hope of reaching Rama’s abode and becoming a devotee of Hari.

और देवता चित्त न धरई। हनुमत सेइ सर्व सुख करई॥

Focused devotion to Hanuman is praised as a path to spiritual joy.

चौपाई 36

संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा। जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥

Remembering mighty Hanuman is traditionally praised as a source of relief from trouble and pain.

जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं। कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥

Victory to Hanuman; please show your grace like a compassionate spiritual teacher.

चौपाई 38

जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई। छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥

Repeated recitation is praised as a devotional practice associated with freedom and great peace.

चौपाई 39

जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा। होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥

The Chalisa declares spiritual fulfillment for the one who recites it, with Shiva as witness.

चौपाई 40

तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा। कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा॥

Tulsidas calls himself Hari’s servant and asks Hanuman to dwell within his heart.

पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप। राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥

O son of the Wind, remover of troubles and embodiment of auspiciousness, dwell in my heart with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.
